Glossary

For those of you that may be new to communications, here's a few of the terms that you may come across on our website.
Aerial/Antenna
A wire, rod or structure designed to transmit or receive radio waves. An antenna or array of antennas would usually be mounted on a mast, tower or other structure to gain height a provide coverage over the required area.

Air works
Activity at transmission sites related to installation of antennas, steelwork mounts, feeders etc on masts, towers and structures.

Array
A number of antennas assembled or mounted in a group to provide a particular transmit or receive pattern.

Cardioid
An antenna, or array of antennas giving a heart-shaped radiation pattern.

CCU/Combiner
Channel Combiner Unit. A device that combines the RF output from several transmitters or channels into a single signal for transmission.

Co-linear
A particular design of antenna. So called because of the arrangement and spacing of the transmit (or receive) elements of the antenna.

Community Relay
A low power television or radio transmission site that relays the signal of a higher power parent site, giving coverage of a local community.

DSO/Digital Switchover
The project to entirely replace analogue terrestrial transmission with digital services.

Feeder/Rigid Line
The RF coaxial cable providing interconnection between transmitters, CCUs and antennas. Feeder tends to be flexible or semi-flexible, while Rigid Line is solid. Typically diameters vary from ¼” or less, up to 6”.

Ground works
Activity at transmission sites related any of the ground-based work such as transmitters, feeders, CCUs, interconnectivity etc. As distinct from the mast or tower based activities or “air works”.

Log periodic array
A particular design of antenna. So called because of the arrangement and spacing of the transmit (or receive) elements of the antenna.

Main Station
A high power television or radio transmission site, forming part of the backbone of the UK transmission network.

Mast
A structure to support antennas and other RF communications equipment. A mast has stay wires and is therefore not self-supporting.

Prince2
A recognised project management methodology.

Relay
A television or radio site that receives then re-transmits the signal from a higher power parent site.

RF
Radio Frequency. Colloquially refers to the range of the electromagnetic spectrum that is usable for communications purposes including radio, television, mobile phones etc.

Switch Frame
A panel of coaxial ports that allows various combinations of CCU, antenna and feeders to be selected. Typically the Antenna Switch Frame provides the interface between the RF ground works and the antenna air works.

Tower
As distinct from a mast, a tower is self-supporting typically with four legs and has no stay wires.

Transmission chain
The path through which the audio or video signal passes at a transmission site. From the base signal arriving at the site through its conversion to RF, increase in power, combination with other services and onward transmission through the antenna system(s).

Transmitter
Converts an incoming audio or video signal into an RF signal for transmission via an antenna.

U Link
A U-shaped coaxial connector used to alter the connection of inputs and outputs, often used on a switch frame.

Yagi
A particular design of antenna. So called because of the arrangement and spacing of the transmit (or receive) elements of the antenna.
